WVDP Chair on the 53rd Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act
(Charleston, WV)- WVDP Chair Belinda Biafore released the following statement to honor and celebrate the 53rd Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.
“On this day in 1964 our President Lyndon Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act taking a monumental step forward in America.
Millions of Americans across the country fought and some gave their lives to allow this step to be taken forward. We are forever grateful and forever indebted to their bravery and honor. Our nation and our state would not be what it is today without those Americans giving up so much for the fight against discrimination and bigotry.
We still today, fight for these same things. Some may think the fight for civil rights is only in the history books, it’s not true. Every single day we step forward in West Virginia, fighting for these same things. While discrimination may seem less subtle to some, to some it isn’t. We will continue the fight every single day.”
