When Will Senate Republicans Respond to Calls For CHIP Reauthorization?
As he declared victory last night, newly-elected Alabama Senator Doug Jones wasted no time in calling on the Republican-led Senate to put politics aside and reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance program as soon as possible.
In his victory speech last night, Doug Jones challenged the Republican-led Senate to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program before he’s even seated.
CNN: “’Take this opportunity in light of this election and go ahead and fund that CHIP program before I get up there,’ Jones issued as a challenge to his ‘future colleagues’ during his victory speech. ‘Put it aside and let’s do it for those million kids and 150,000 here in Birmingham, Alabama.’”
Yesterday, a bipartisan group of governors also joined Doug Jones in calling for immediate CHIP reauthorization.
Associated Press: “Twelve governors of both parties are urging Congress to reauthorize funding for a popular children’s health insurance program as soon as possible. The recommendation involving the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, came in a letter to congressional leaders Tuesday.”
As millions of children and their families are at risk of losing their health care, Republicans have instead chosen to prioritize passing massive tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations.
