Republican Leaders Misled Teachers and School Service Personnel

“Republican leadership has inserted politics into our public schools”

Minority Leaders Senator Roman Prezioso and Delegate Tim Miley released the following statement calling out Republican leaders for misleading our teachers and school service personnel about money available to invest in the future of our education system:

“Time has proven that Republican legislators and their leadership have misled our teachers and service personnel about the amount of money available to invest in the future of our education system.

“During this most recent legislative session, there were multiple proposals to provide meaningful and significant pay raises to our teachers, school service personnel, and state employees while also offering a solution to fund and fix PEIA.

“Unfortunately, the Republican legislature denied these meaningful pay raises at every turn, claiming that there was no money to pay for such increases.

“This refusal by the Republican legislators left our teachers with no alternative but to leave their classrooms for 10 days, which denied our children valuable educational opportunities.

“We now know that it took bringing our state’s educational system to a grinding halt before the Republican leadership in Charleston were forced to provide any raises at all, and they still have not provided any fix to PEIA.

“Now, Republican leaders are scrambling to get out of the mess they’ve created because they are worried about losing seats in November. Sadly, the Republican leadership has inserted politics into our public schools.

For them, it’s all about politics and not the people of West Virginia. “
