Disclosure Reports Show House of Delegates Candidate
Riley Moore Lobbied for Ukraine’s Pro-Russian Government
Charleston, WV— Today, the West Virginia Democratic Party called on House of Delegates candidate Riley Moore (R-67th District) to publicly address his ties to the pro-Russian organization the European Center for a Modern Ukraine and Paul Manafort, the disgraced chair of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
Moore is directly implicated in the scandal that has brought down Trump’s campaign chairman. As news broke over the past several days about Manafort’s potential illegal business dealings with former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, federal lobby disclosure reports from 2013 indicate that Moore was one of a few DC-based lobbyists who petitioned Congress on behalf the pro-Russian government of Ukraine.
The Associated Press has reported that Moore’s firm collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from ECFMU and that lobbying activities included dissuading Congress from passing a resolution calling on the release of political prisoners in Ukraine. Former Ukrainian President Yanukovych has close ties to Russian President Vladmir Putin, regularly employed repressive political tactics, and used lethal force against civilian protesters before being removed from office in 2014.
Furthermore, Moore and Manafort failed to register with the U.S. Justice Department, which is required when lobbying on behalf of foreign leaders or their political parties.
“Riley Moore owes it to the voters of Jefferson County to explain his past history with the corrupt Ukrainian government and other pro-Russian interests,” said Belinda Biafore, WVDP Chair. “The citizens of the 67th district deserve a delegate who wakes up every day focused on the interests of Jefferson County, not overseas tyrants. This certainly calls into question Moore’s values and priorities. We cannot trust someone in the West Virginia Legislature who can be bought by thuggish foreign regimes.”
