Republican Speaker Strips Delegate of Committee Assignment After Education Vote
Still no action on Porterfield for hate remarks
(Charleston, WV)– Yesterday several Republican Delegates sided with Democrats to kill Senate Bill 451 and now, Republican Delegate McGeehan has been stripped of his committee assignment while no action has been taken against Porterfield who has spent the last couple of weeks making hate remarks against the LGBTQ community.
“It sure does seem like Speaker Hanshaw agrees with Porterfield,” said Belinda Biafore, WVDP Chairwoman. “It’s sickening to think that individuals in our government are willing to ignore and in some ways encourage this type of hate, but will strip a fellow Republican Delegate of committee assignments after standing up for his constituency on the dangerous education bill.”
For the last couple of weeks, Delegate Porterfield made a string of hateful remarks against the LGBTQ community and even said he would see if his children “could swim” when asked how he would feel about them being gay.
West Virginia Democratic Party Chairwoman called for Porterfield’s resignation and called for Republican Leadership to take action against Porterfield. No action has been taken.
“There is no excuse for the actions and words of Delegate Porterfield and for Speaker Hanshaw to not take action is sickening enough, but to now take action against another Delegate for listening to his district almost leaves me without words. Action needs to be taken against Porterfield. The people of West Virginia do not deserve this self-serving leadership. Hanshaw cares more about his loyalties and political motivations than he does the people of West Virginia.”
